I am honoured that the main hall in Melbourne Recital Centre bears my name. Music has been a source of enlightenment, comfort and enjoyment throughout my life and the knowledge that this hall will enrich the lives of future generations makes me very happy.
On behalf of all Victorians, I thank the State Government for the extraordinary financial commitment to this magnificent fusion of architecture, engineering and music. We all acknowledge the effort, expertise and dollars that have been invested in ensuring that Melbourne has a recital hall, with the kind of acoustic excellence suitable for chamber music, that I have been fortunate to experience in some of the great halls of the world. And in this age of innovation, I am especially pleased that state-of-the-art technology will add another dimension to the resources of this great venue.
As Melbourne Recital Centre takes shape on the corner of Sturt Street and Southbank Boulevard, our attention shifts to ensuring that this marvellous venue is a living space for making, sharing and enjoying great music. I urge you to support my dear friend Jim Cousins, the tireless Chairman of Melbourne Recital Centre, his directors and staff, in their drive to complete the capital campaign and to make the Melbourne Recital Centre Endowment Fund a major resource for this wonderful organisation.
