Details

1 poet + 23 poems + 23 composers = 1 extraordinary concert

Commissioned for the Music and Words Series at the State Library of Queensland, Smoke Encrypted Whispers is a remarkable journey through Samuel Wagan Watson’s multi-award winning cycle of 23 poems.

These are poems that resonate through the heartland of 1980s Australia, particularly the poet’s hometown of Brisbane.

23 composers were asked to respond to a certain poem and the result is a remarkable series of brief but potent compositions whose diversity of style and emotional highs leave performers and audience alike gasping for breath.

‘A sonic tapestry…as torpid as a summer day, as threatening as a thundershower’ – The Australian.
