If On a Winter's Night a Traveller

Tilman Robinson

A dramatic and engaging journey

Tilman Robinson has been awarded the 2012 APRA Commission for the Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival. The resulting piece, Network of Lines for electro acoustic jazz ensemble, is framed around the Italo Calvino novel If On a Winter’s Night a Traveller.

Set in a fictional European country between the two World Wars, Calvino’s novel weaves together 10 miniature stories, each featuring a different plot, style and ambience.

Robinson’s piece is an exceptionally moving evocation of a society in turmoil, where forceful and near-violent passages are set amidst lush warmth.

This event coincides with the album launch of this work.

Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre and Tilman Robinson.

This production is part of the following series:

Mood Indigo

The Centre’s new series dedicated to the exploration of jazz, blues, funk, soul, fusion, pop and more.
