‘Shine a Light is an album of big ideas and lofty intentions.’ All Music
English singer-songwriter Billy Bragg and American singer-songwriter Joe Henry have between them recorded over 25 albums, won countless accolades, garnered rave reviews for their live performances and written some of the most original thought provoking songs of our times.
Billy has been a fearless recording artist, tireless live performer and peerless political campaigner for over 30 years having collaborated with Wilco, Natalie Merchant and more recently Joe Henry himself. Henry is known for pushing the envelope with his intimate, richly detailed songs that he has shaped by his eclectic musical worldview. Together the two have united to record a new album which they are bringing to Melbourne along with favourites from their past.
In March 2016 Billy and Joe, guitars in hand, boarded a Los Angeles-bound train in Chicago with the hope of reconnecting with the culture of American railroad travel and the songs it inspired. Winding along 2728 miles of track, the pair recorded songs while the train paused to pick up passengers in waiting rooms and track side. They hurriedly set up their recording equipment, performing classic railroad songs while keeping one eye on the train, bounding back aboard just before pulling out for the next town. After four days crossing the country, they pulled into L.A. at 4.30am, recording their final song in Union Station at dawn, just as the first birds began to sing. The resulting album Shine a Light: Field Recordings from the Great American Railroad takes listeners along on that journey.
Hear these two greats perform songs from the journey, along with favourites from their own back catalogues in an evening that crosses countries, boundaries, genres and ideas.
Join Billy Bragg and Joe Henry in the ground floor foyer following the performance for a CD signing.
