Details

Internationally acclaimed for its ‘addictive sound’, ‘intuitive’ music making and ‘technical virtuosity’, Tinalley String Quartet (TSQ) is one of Australia’s most awarded classical music exports and is celebrated as one of the finest strings quartets of its generation.

Grand Prize Winners of the 2005 Australian Chamber Music Competition and First Prize Winners of the Ninth Banff International String Quartet Competition, TSQ has performed throughout Australia, Europe, Canada and the United States, appeared at the nation’s premier music festivals, and in 2017/18, will be ‘Quartet in Residence’ at the Coriole Music Festival in the McLaren Vale, South Australia. TSQ’s 2017 concert series is inspired by the words of the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy.

Inspired by the words of Leo Tolstoy, Another State of Being features masterpieces of two Czech composers, Antonín Dvořák’s beloved ‘American’ Quartet and Leoš Janáček’s ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata. The ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata was written in response to Leo Tolstoy’s provocative novella of the same name. Tolstoy’s writing in turn was inspired by Beethoven’s ‘Kreutzer’ sonata for violin and piano, and is a vivid portrayal of jealousy, obsession and violence. Janáček’s composition demonstrates a deeply personal response to the novella and is a compelling musical narrative of the shocking subject matter Tolstoy explored. Continuing on from Janáček to Tolstoy’s muse – Ludwig van Beethoven, the ‘Harp’ Quartet may be considered one of Beethoven’s more peaceful outpourings. The program concludes with Dvořák’s ‘American’ Quartet, written whilst the composer was holidaying in the small American village of Spillville, a favourite with Czech travellers. Surrounded by his fellow countrymen and speaking his native tongue once more – the music poured forth.
