David Greco

baritone

“What attracts me to these two spectacular cantatas by Bach, apart from the sublimely crafted composition and rich melodic writing, is Bach’s depiction of death as a form of almost ecstatic joy. I’m attracted to the deep Lutheran values this music is steeped in – the idea that death is not something to fear, but in fact a joyous reward to being closer to God. This is humble but rich and firey music. Deeply human.” David Greco

International Australian born baritone, David Greco has has worked on the cutting edge of the early music movement in Europe for the last eight years, performing regularly with The Academy of Ancient Music under Richard Egarr and Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra under Ton Koopman. He has appeared as a soloist with worlds most exceptional festivals, in productions such as Gluck’s Alcêste with Festival Aix-en Provence and Glyndebourne Festival Opera’s most recent presentation of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen. Having sung throughout Europe’s finest concert halls, from the Théâtre des Champs Elysées to Vienna Konzerthaus, last year David made his debut singing the music of J.S.Bach at the Royal Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. In 2012 David was bass Lay Clark in Westminster Abbey Choir, and in 2014 was appointed a position with the Sistine Chapel Choir in the Vatican, Rome.

2016 saw David’s debut as a principle artist with Opera Australia in The Love of Three Oranges & The Eighth Wonder, and also the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in performances of Mozart’s Missa Brevis. He performed the role of Wagner in Gounod’s Faust in a co-production with Lyric Opera Chicago and the Macau International Music Festival. In highlights of 2017, David appears as the soloist for the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra’s tour of Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Matthäus-Passion and Messiah with Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, Monteverdi’s Il Coranazione di Poppea for Pinchgut Opera. This year will also see him appear in a series of recitals at the Melbourne Recital Centre, including a concert with Australian baroque ensemble Latitude 37 and a debut song recital of Schubert ‘Love in the Age of Syphilis’ with Erin Helyard. David’s Naxos Recording debut was recently released ‘Poems of Love & War’, featuring arias by New Zealand composer, Jack Body.

“…the star soloist of tonight’s performance was local baritone David Greco. The man can sing, act and near terrify the audience when he appeared in the second half of tonight’s performance on the second level of City Recital Hall, side of stage. A true storyteller.” Classikon 2017

“Bass David Greco … impressive voices with talent to spare but none more so than the bass whose tone, sense of text and authoritative delivery was ideally matched to the work [by Bach].” Sydney Morning Herald, 2016
