Kristian Chong & Friends

Brahms Piano Quintet

Kristian Chong

Details

Pianist Kristian Chong is one of Australia’s most sought-after musicians performing as a soloist, chamber musician and concerto pianist.

The series Kristian Chong & Friends is literally an assembly of his enthusiastic friends performing together some of the great chamber duo sonatas, trios, quartets and quintets.

Kristian is lucky to count amongst his friends some exceptional Australian and international musicians, including violinists Dale Barltrop, Rebecca Chan, Adam Chalabi, Sophie Rowell and Natsuko Yoshimoto, cellist Li-Wei Qin and violist Christopher Moore. Kristian Chong & Friends is simply great chamber music performed by some of Australia’s most brilliant and acclaimed musicians.

A masterpiece of the chamber music literature, Brahms’ Piano Quintet provides a profound listening journey, as well as being one of the most enjoyable works to perform. It is one of the darkest musical canvasses of Brahms’s career; a mighty work of tremendous scope, and is generally considered as his greatest chamber music work. Brahms was also a great supporter and friend of Dvořák, whose gorgeous and yet fragile Sonata in F opens this recital, setting the mood for the F minor piano quintet. Joining Kristian is the brilliant Ike See from the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra principal 2nd violinist Matthew Tomkins, principal violist Christopher Moore and associate principal cello Rachael Tobin in what will be a memorable musical evening.
