In Conversation with Andrew Bird

Details

Join us for rare up-close and personal afternoon discussion with Andrew Bird and Caroline Tran

Andrew Bird is an internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and songwriter. He has released ten solo albums, including the 2016 release Are You Serious. He recently contributed to the score of the FX series Baskets, appeared on the Muppets soundtrack, and debuted the first in a series of experimental composition works, Echolocations: Canyon.

A classically-trained musician, Bird began playing the violin at age four, learning Bach and Mozart by ear as if they were folk tunes. Initially coming onto the scene with zany swing band the Squirrel Nut Zippers before forming Bowl of Fire, Bird’s sound began to evolve in an indie-folk direction after he went solo. But indie-folk – or any single genre – is just a backbone for a swirl of loops, samples and gorgeously rich instrumentation underpinning lyrics of mysterious import. It’s a sound that unites a broad swathe of music-lovers from the folk, blues, classical and pop worlds in adoration.

Join us for rare up-close and personal discussion with Andrew Bird. Andrew will share insights into his creative process, musings on his career- and hopefully will treat us to a few songs along the way. This is a unique opportunity for an intimate audience to participate in the creative conversation and learn from this remarkable musician.

Caroline (Caz) Tran is a passionate champion of Australian music, has worked with triple j for over 10 years, and has hosted shows on Double J since its launch.
