Bach’s St John Passion on Good Friday

The five minute ovation after the Melbourne Bach Choir’s 2016 performance of the St Matthew Passion was matched by The Age four star review: ‘Warwick Fyfe revisited with splendid force his Christus part – no brooding Redeemer here’; and Andrew Goodwin’s Evangelist was ‘one of those performances that lives in the memory for days, the delivery clarion-clear with unshakeable reliability, even in the line’s stretching high tessitura, and an emotional responsiveness leading to several pin-drop moments.’

For their performance of Bach’s St John Passion, the choir are joined again by Andrew Goodwin (Evangelist) and Warwick Fyfe (Jesus), soprano Lorina Gore, mezzo-soprano Dominica Matthews, tenor Henry Choo and bass-baritone Jeremy Kleeman completing a stellar group of Australian soloists. From the darkly evocative orchestral opening, Bach creates a narrative more compelling than that of any opera of the period. Sung in German, this extraordinary musical journey is the perfect reflection for Good Friday.

Reviews

Ten years after his MBC debut, bass Warwick Fyfe revisited with splendid force his Christus part…Andrew Goodwin’s Evangelist: one of those performances that lives in the memory for days, the delivery clarion-clear with unshakeable reliability, even in the line’s stretching high tessitura, and an emotional responsiveness leading to several pin-drop moments.
