Details

Quartz’s unique programs shine a light on the string quartet repertoire by highlighting well-known pieces of beauty and energy.

Composed of four highly acclaimed Melbourne musicians Kathryn Taylor and Rachael Beesley (violins), Merewyn Bramble (viola) and Zoe Wallace (cello), Quartz’s performances are full of passion and vibrancy. Having performed at the Melbourne Recital Centre since 2013, their 2017 season presents two dynamic and innovative programs that focus on the composers Grieg and Smetana.

Quartz are joined by special guest artist Australia’s wonderful mezzo-soprano Sally-Anne Russell, a guest principal with Opera Australia, a recitalist and recording artist for their first concert of the year. Performing a selection of emotional and engaging songs, Sibelius’s ‘Come away, death’, Respighi’s lyric poem ‘The Sunset’ and Purcell’s exquisite ‘Dido’s Lament’, all display hauntingly expressive harmonies which when one delves deeper into the essence of these works bleed with the sadness and beauty of great a love that is lived and then lost, just as the sun rises and sets. Grieg’s String Quartet No.1, his only completed quartet is largely influenced by his love for Norwegian national music and has an earthy energy often found in folk dance and is one of the most original and influential string quartets of the late 19th century.
