ABOUT THIS EVENT

In the stunning surrounds of the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, experience a double bill of two special 20th century operas which question our ideas of identity and the very nature of our being.

Shadow puppets are attacked and a theatre is destroyed as the legendary Don Quixote lays waste to a helpless puppet show. This episode from the classic Cervantes novel inspired Spanish composer Manuel de Falla to create Master Peter’s Puppet Show. Victorian Opera, in collaboration with cutting edge Black Hole Theatre, brings this one act puppet opera to life as part of a fascinating 20th century opera double bill.

American composer, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and living legend Elliott Carter wrote his only opera at 90. What Next? opens with a volley of percussion as a car crash shakes the reality of everyday existence. The opera follows a group of people who regain consciousness after an accident. As Rose, Stella, Zen, Harry or Larry and Mama all try to recall who they are, the question on everyone’s mind is, are they survivors or victims?

‘What next? That’s the big question this little opera grapples with so affectingly.’ – New York Times

Daniel Carter embarks on his debut as lead conductor in this enigmatic double bill.
