The Brandenburg Choir
Australian Brandenburg Orchestra
Paul Dyer artistic director and conductor
On Christmas Eve in 1818, in the Austrian village of Obendorf, one of the most celebrated Christmas carols was written. In the church of St Nicholas, preparation for the midnight mass had been thrown into chaos with the discovery that the church organ had broken down. Faced with the possibility of a silent night, the parish priest and organist hurriedly wrote a work for the remaining instruments, guitar and voice. The work they performed was Stille Nacht, now better known as Silent Night, which has since been translated into 300 languages around the world.
Performed by the Brandenburg Choir in the original German and accompanied on theorbo, Stille Nacht is just one of the many Christmas choral delights revealed in past Noël! Noël! concerts. Artistic Director Paul Dyer's joyful tribute to the festive season is an inspiring mix of the ancient and the modern.
Now in its 14th year, Noël! Noël! 'has become, deservedly, one of the hottest tickets in town' (SMH), featuring the angelic voices of the Brandenburg Choir performing medieval chant, folk songs and much loved carols accompanied by period instruments. Described by Brandenburg audiences as 'magical', 'fantastic' and 'superb', Noël! Noël! is a not to be missed concert experience.
