SCHUMANN Kreisleriana, eight fantasies for the piano, Op.16
Music and the other arts have a symbiotic relationship: writers, painters, poets and composers have been inspired collaborators since the beginning of creativity. Kreisleriana brings two artists together in an exploration of Robert Schumann's collection of mercurial character pieces inspired by the Gothic tales of ETA Hoffmann.
Great Performer Cedric Tiberghien plays piano while Melbourne-based artist Domenico de Clario paints, transforming the sounds he hears into visual music in the heat of the moment for a live audience. Kreisleriana, one of Schumann's best-loved works, is a semi-autobiographical portrait of a manic-depressive Romantic genius. Full of dazzling wit, boisterous energy and sudden darkness, Kreisleriana is a tour-de-force of the Romantic imagination. As the music unfolds, a painting inspired by it will be created before your eyes. De Clario's eloquent artworks are in the collections of major Australian and international galleries, including New York's Museum of Modern Art. Acclaimed French pianist Cedric Tiberghien also plays Debussy as part of the Great Performers series on Tuesday 10 July.
