Internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and songwriter Andrew Bird finally returns to Melbourne.
Winding together his trademark violin technique with xylophone, vocals and sophisticated electronic looping and his uncanny ability to whistle anything, Bird is a riveting one-man orchestra, aided and abetted on this tour by his band.
A classically-trained musician, Bird began playing the violin at age four, learning Bach and Mozart by ear as if they were folk tunes. Initially coming onto the scene with zany swing band the Squirrel Nut Zippers before forming Bowl of Fire, Bird’s sound began to evolve in an indie-folk direction after he went solo. But indie-folk – or any single genre – is just a backbone for a swirl of loops, samples and gorgeously rich instrumentation underpinning lyrics of mysterious import. It’s a sound that unites a broad swathe of music-lovers from the folk, blues, classical and pop worlds in adoration.
With the new album, Are You Serious, Bird attains a level of expression that’s a personal, evolutionary leap. ‘Here I am with my most unguarded, direct, relatable album to date,’ Bird says, ‘Go easy on me.’ Are You Serious is an album of sweet, layered songs of love and chemistry.
Hear the skilled lyricist and virtuoso whistler perform a mysterious and wondrous concert of new and familiar material – a rare chance to hear where Bird has come from and where he’s going.
Andrew Bird will be signing CDs in the ground floor foyer following the concert.

The violin is just the easiest way I have to express what’s in my head. I’ll just fully, unconsciously do whatever it takes to make that sound happen.
Andrew’s voice is pure and whistle powerful, the perfect mixture with his six-string and violin.
