One of the most exciting musical talents to come out of the U.K., the award-winning singer-songwriter Laura Mvula is heading to Melbourne to win our hearts.

‘Like hearing Billie Holiday with The Beach Boys.’ The Guardian (U.K.)

The classically trained vocalist has been compared to the likes of Nina Simone and will no doubt own the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall stage. The soulful vocalist, known for her inventive, atmospheric mix of R&B, jazz, classical and pop, grew up in Birmingham and used to sing in her aunt’s a cappella group Black Voices.

In 2008, she formed a group called Judyshouse which she fronted and wrote songs for. Laura first broke through in 2013 with a full-length debut album, Sing to the Moon, and a fully formed sound that bridged eras and genres with the aid of bright, elastic pop production. Ping-ponging from springy dance-pop anthems to sullenly introspective ballads, Mvula set the bar extremely high for the career to come. Her debut album earned her a swag of prestigious award nominations and wins and her sophomore album The Dreaming Room has been nominated for a 2016 Mercury Prize for ‘Album of the Year’.

Laura’s music encompasses the kind of big, brassy movie soundtrack music popular in the ’50s and ’60s, the radiant, soul-inflected pop balladry akin to British singers like Estelle and Emeli Sandé, and bright choral harmonies inspired by her experience performing in gospel choirs. It’s an intoxicating sound that one can’t easily categorise yet makes everything she does so engaging and original.

‘Her soulful vocals and florid soundscapes have helped this 26-year-old invent a new musical genre – gospeldelia.’ The Guardian (U.K.)
