Schumann Quartet

Melbourne Recital Centre’s inaugural Artist in Residence, Paul Grabowsky is joined by Erkki Veltheim, Brett Dean and Rosanne Hunt to perform Robert Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat, Op.47.

Described by Grabowsky himself, this particular work retells ‘a climactic psychotic episode during which Schumann was assailed by visions both exhilarating and terrifying. Schumann’s music is rich in melody, artful in structure and holds a great expressive depth. It has been fascinating for me to reflect on a composer grappling with severe mental illness, a quality which places him in a direct relationship to the contemporary world.’

Having longed to perform the work, this performance features four short ‘glosses’ written by Grabowsky between the movements, suggesting the less linear tumult never far from Schumann’s own thoughts.
