Details

Internationally acclaimed for its ‘addictive sound’, ‘intuitive’ music making and ‘technical virtuosity’, Tinalley String Quartet (TSQ) is one of Australia’s most awarded classical music exports and is celebrated as one of the finest strings quartets of its generation.

Grand Prize Winners of the 2005 Australian Chamber Music Competition and First Prize Winners of the Ninth Banff International String Quartet Competition, TSQ has performed throughout Australia, Europe, Canada and the United States, appeared at the nation’s premier music festivals, and in 2017/18, will be ‘Quartet in Residence’ at the Coriole Music Festival in the McLaren Vale, South Australia. TSQ’s 2017 concert series is inspired by the words of the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy.

Felix Mendelssohn spent much of his life devoted to promoting the music of the most influential, innovative and prodigious composer of any era: J.S. Bach. Tinalley String Quartet acknowledge this extraordinary link between the two great composers performing Mendelssohn’s Op.12 quartet composed in 1829, the same year that Mendelssohn conducted the first performance of St Matthew’s Passion since Bach’s death over 80 years earlier. In a new commission by Tinalley String Quartet, composer Calvin Bowman reimagines the stunning aria, ‘Erbarme Dich’ from St Matthew’s Passion, sung by guest artist Greta Bradman. Continuing the theme of song and inspiration, Greta Bradman and Tinalley perform a new adaptation of Schubert’s song ‘Death and the Maiden’, the inspiration for Schubert’s epic quartet of the same name.
