with special guest Woodes

Icelandic singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and collaborator Ásgeir returns to Australia bringing his folk-electro to Melbourne Recital Centre.

Born in the tiny hamlet of Laugarbakki, population 40, Ásgeir specialises in intimate, soulful songs that span indie electronic and atmospheric folk. The tight-knit intimacy and soulfulness that radiates from his performances feel familial and warm, even as the music itself carries a glacial chill. His acclaimed 2012 release Dýrð í dauðaþögn is 10 tracks of supreme, soul-searching folk, featuring lyrics penned by his father, Einar Georg Einarsson – a renowned poet. Two years later the English version, In the Silence, was released making Ásgeir a phenomenon in his native land and abroad.

The 2017 daringly electronic new album Afterglow leaves behind the folk-tinged acoustics of his former releases and dives head first into melancholic, melodic electronica in its purest form. Ásgeir shows all the confident hallmarks of an artist who’s now at home with his status as one of music’s most distinct voices. His new globe-trotting wisdom ambitiously balances icy electronic shades of Bon Iver, James Blake and Anohni with soul, R’n‘B and even gospel influences from different eras and places.

Renowned for his ability to make even the largest of spaces feel intimate, Ásgeir will treat audiences to a personal and emotional show in the beautiful acoustics of Elisabeth Murdoch Hall. Experience the musical intimacy and soulfulness of Ásgeir and lose yourself within his chilled-out serene sound imagery.

We are instantly captivated by his beautiful vocals and radiating presence.

As the lights fell and darkness settled around him, his soaring voice sounded clear and high. The effect was lonely, spare, mysterious, and very, very beautiful.
