Melbourne Bach Choir and Orchestra, led by founding conductor Rick Prakhoff, continue their tradition of Good Friday concerts with this imaginative program.
Following the success of Opera Australia’s recent Melbourne production of King Roger, by Polish composer Karol Szymanowski, his rarely performed Stabat Mater will be paired with the much loved German Requiem by Brahms.
The choir and orchestra are joined by an outstanding cast of soloists — Lorina Gore (soprano), Belinda Paterson (mezzo-soprano) and Warwick Fyfe (baritone). The six short movements of Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater invoke Polish folk elements and Renaissance contrapuntal devices, in a highly personal setting. Brahms’ choice of text for the Requiem was also individualistic, focusing on a more humanist rather than overtly Christian take on the concept of the end of life, in this moving, deeply felt and dramatic work.
