Hubei Symphony Orchestra – Lake Honghu In Concert
In an Australian first, Hubei Symphony Orchestra, Hubei Provincial Opera and Dance Drama Theatre present a modern concert production of the classic Chinese opera, Lake Honghu.
Blending western style opera with traditional Chinese and Hubei folk music, celebrated Australian conductor Vanessa Scammell (My Fair Lady, The Merry Widow, South Pacific) conducts this powerful performance with the Hubei Symphony Orchestra, seven lead vocalists and forty choir members.
The original opera was first performed in October 1956 in Wuhan, Hubei by the Hubei Experimental Theater Society. Based on the true story of the conflict in the Honghu Base Area in the summer of 1930, the music has national significance and influenced an entire generation.
