If the Gods came down to earth dressed as cowboys



Metropolis New Music Festival 2018 opens with an energetic explosion of sound from some original and provocative composers and musicians.

The acclaimed ELISION ensemble takes to the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall stage with a specially-curated program of new works.

The Festival’s Composer-in-Focus Unsuk Chin wrote her Fantaisie mécanique for the Paris-based Ensemble Intercontemporain and is predicated on the union of two contradictory concepts: improvisation and predetermined structure. Adi Snir is fascinated by the possibilities for interpretation that are opened up in the spaces left by traces of written composition. Aaron Cassidy’s large-scale work was premiered in 2016 at the Bendigo International Festival of Exploratory Music where it dazzled with its unique bubbling, arcing sound world. And Liza Lim’s new work for ELISION is inspired by a residency in Brazil exploring the instruments and works of visionary composer, cellist, philosopher and instrument builder Walter Smetak.

Audiences are welcome and encouraged to join the artists for a post-concert talk in the ground floor foyer.
