Ricochet are a sound art group, developed in 2013 out of the Melbourne free improvisation movement.

Ricochet’s music is constructed as a long form improvisation, most often directed and molded by communal restrictions or concepts.

This performance uses pre-organised musical restrictions and structures to investigate ‘Mixed Reckoning’, the term for the uniquely Australian seasonal cycles. Mixed Reckoning becomes a means to investigate sense of place through sound. This performance is a series of short and medium length improvisational ‘miniatures’, the cycle of which takes one hour to complete. The music retains elements of virtuosity while utilising repetition, space, texture and simplicity.

Each movement is designed through a Haiku form taken from Japanese literature. Conceptually grounded in the seasons of Australia, the work also takes cues from Steve Reich and Korean philosophy. The work has been performed only once in entirety.
