Quartz celebrate the generosity of nature through the scores of three composers from three different periods
Uniting the talents of its four highly-acclaimed members Kathryn Taylor, Philippa West, Merewyn Bramble and Zoe Wallace, Quartz has become a well-known Melbourne ensemble renowned for their vibrant and innovative programs. Their pairing of classic string quartet repertoire with lesser known contemporary pieces continues to add to their unique voice within the local and national scene, contributing to their success on stage and in the recording studio.
Celebrating the generosity of nature through the scores of three composers from three different periods this performance opens with Haydn’s ‘The Lark’ – a simple birdsong infused with perky staccato and a winged melody. Max Richter’s ‘On the Nature of Daylight’, a lush minimalist movement penned in protest to the Iraq War, reflecting an eternal suffering yet enduring human form – most well-known from its features in recent films Shutter Island and Arrival. And finally, Bruch’s first quartet returns us to nature, following in the romantic footprints of Mendelssohn and Schumann whilst exploring the lyricism associated with his vocal compositions.
