‘Hampson’s voice retains its clarion power, burnished tone and pellucid clarity.’ – LA Times
Thomas Hampson is one of the world’s foremost musicians, not just a charismatic opera star but also a passionate advocate for American song, and an insightful and articulate spokesman for his art-form. At 6′4″, Hampson is an imposing figure on the stage, with a baritone voice to match. You’d cast him as a leading man – tragic hero, perhaps – but he can also play a scoundrel, a devil or a buffoon. This kind of versatility lends itself to the song recital – the art of telling a dozen stories in an evening. Hampson will of course sing Mahler and Schubert, two cornerstones of lieder, but we’ll also hear from his more recent excursion into the elegant world French chanson. Hampson is a passionate advocate for American music, and he showcases songs from his heartland – the traditional and the folk-inspired – by Bowles, Copland and others.
From Melbourne Recital Centre’s Director of Artistic Planning, Marshall McGuire:
‘We’re delighted to welcome acclaimed American baritone to Australia for the first time, making his debut here in recital in May. One of the great American singers of our time, he is acknowledged as a leading interpreter of Mahler, and also a champion of the American songbook. His recital covers that wide range of repertoire, giving us an insight into the musical soul of this outstanding singer.’
Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre with The Langham Melbourne. Supported by Ensemble Giovane.
