Gideon Obarzanek's Circle Dance

Presented by Yellow Wheel

Gideon Obarzanek

Long before Gideon Obarzanek founded contemporary dance company Chunky Move, he was learning traditional Israeli folk dance on kibbutz.

The core choreography in ‘Circle Dance’ began its life there, and has been extrapolated out from a memory of a movement that Obarzanek has found himself returning to and drawing inspiration from in recent years.

Obarzanek founded Chunky Move in 1995 and led the company as artistic director until 2012. He has performed diverse works on stage and in film and installations across the world. In 2015 he created ‘Circle Dance’ in collaboration with the graduate students of the Victorian College of the Arts School of Dance.

Performed for the first time by Australian dance company Yellow Wheel, watch the dancers succumb to an unrelenting physical drive in this intense performance, the folk roots of which are occasionally revealed to only the most observant eye.
