Aventurine is a stunning new work from acclaimed bassist and composer, Linda May Han Oh.
Performed by a quartet of fearless jazz improvisers (including Cuban-born pianist Fabian Almazan), Melbourne’s celebrated Flinders Quartet, and vocal ensemble Invenio led by Gian Slater, Aventurine seamlessly blends references as diverse as Cuban dance, Korean traditional rhythms and Charlie Parker.
Named for a kind of quartz which glistens and shimmers in the light, Aventurine is lyrical, rhythmically charged and interwoven with themes of belonging and cultural identity.
A longstanding member of guitar legend Pat Metheny’s quartet, Oh is renowned for her improvisational prowess and instrumental mastery. Having worked with Joe Lovano, Vijay Iyer, Kenny Barron and Terri Lyne Carrington, she is at the forefront of New York’s current jazz mainstream.
This extraordinary Australian premiere is destined to be a Festival highlight, lingering in the hearts and minds of the audience long after the final note is heard.
