Details

Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto returns to Melbourne to direct an exciting program of contemporary music based around the world premiere of American composer Nico Muhly’s Concerto for Violin and Strings, commissioned by the ACO and Melbourne Recital Centre.

Nico straddles multiple genres of music including writing opera and chamber music, and collaborations with Björk, Bryce Dessner and Sufjan Stevens.

Pekka not only invited Nico to write this concerto but also asked him to help curate the program. Missy Mazzoli’s You Know Me From Here sees the welcome return of Nico’s fellow New Yorker after she wowed ACO audiences with her 2018 world premiere of Dark With Excessive Bright.

The program also features American minimalist Steve Reich’s Duet, Alex Mills’s One is Fun and Andrea Tarrodi’s Birds of Paradise, which will set an expectant atmosphere for Nico’s highly anticipated premiere. Nico will also attend the performance and participate in a special pre-concert conversation.

Following the world premiere performance of Nico Muhly’s Violin Concerto by ACO Collective, there will be a special duo set featuring Nico himself on piano with Pekka Kuusisto in Breaking Ground, a program of their own curation that combines the music of J.S. Bach with contemporary fare. Admission to this special performance is included with all tickets to Nico Muhly and the New.
