Nicole Car

soprano

Nicole Car is one of the most outstanding young singers to emerge from Australia in recent years. In 2015, she made her début at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden – singing Tatyana in Eugene Onegin and Micaëla in Carmen. The following year she sang Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte and the title role in Luisa Miller for Opera Australia (winning her first Helpmann Award for the latter) and Fiordiligi for Deutsche Oper Berlin, Semperoper Dresden and Opera Australia.

After completing her Bachelor of Music at the Victorian College of the Arts, Nicole won the 2007 Herald-Sun Aria; she was the 2012 winner of the ASC Opera Awards and the 2013 winner of the international Neue Stimmen competition in Germany. Her major role debut occurred in 2009 performing Donna Anna in Victorian Opera’s Don Giovanni.

Since then, Nicole’s many roles for Opera Australia have included Tatyana (Eugene Onegin), Micaëla (Carmen), Mimi (La bohème), Marguerite (Faust), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Leila (The Pearl Fishers), The Countess (Le nozze di Figaro), Fiordiligi (Cosi fan tutte) and both Donna Anna and Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni). She has sung Donna Anna for West Australian Opera and Adalgisa for Victorian Opera.

Concert engagements have included Brahms’ Deutsches Requiem for the Queensland and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras; Das Klagende Lied for the QSO; The Last Night of the Proms for the TSO; Mozart’s Requiem for the Auckland Philharmonia; St. John’s Passion for Sydney Philharmonia and a major programme of Strauss and Mozart with the Melbourne Symphony.

Nicole is in increasing demand as a recording artist – appearing as soloist in the Deutsches Requiem for the MSO with bass-baritone Teddy Tahu Rhodes (ABC Classics), as featured artist on Rule Britannia! for the TSO (ABC Classics) and as Micaela in Carmen for Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour (CD/DVD – Opera Australia).

In 2014, she made her American debut as The Countess for Dallas Opera and her European début the following year as Tatyana for Deutsche Oper Berlin.
