Lewis’s way with these pieces is masterly.’ The Independent

Completing his epic survey of the great works of Haydn, Beethoven and Brahms, Paul Lewis once again displays his extraordinary gifts in this grand program of masterpieces. Pianist Alfred Brendel (Lewis’s teacher and mentor) calls Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations ‘the greatest of all piano works’.

What better way to conclude this pianistic journey by Lewis than with the greatest work of all. This concert is a homecoming for Paul Lewis, and for us. For the last two seasons Lewis has led us on a journey of discovery into the very soul of the piano through the music of Haydn, Beethoven and Brahms. We’ve experienced Haydn’s mercurial wit, Beethoven’s emotional extremes and Brahms’ interiority. Lewis concludes his survey with three of their greatest works: the high drama of Haydn’s E-minor sonata, Brahms’ dreamiest intermezzos, and finally Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations, where an artless little waltz explodes into a universe of humour, tragedy and transcendence.
