ASQ regrets to advise ASQ plays Intimate Letters on Wednesday 15 July has been cancelled.

Melbourne Recital Centre cares deeply about the health and safety of its audiences, artists and staff. Mozart’s delightful musical contrasts, the intense emotions of Janáček’s Intimate Letters and the world premiere of a new work by Australia’s renowned, Ross Edwards.

Perhaps the most famous of Mozart’s string quartets, Dissonance is a surprising and delightful study of musical contrasts, standing as one of the finest examples of the composer’s creative genius.

Building bridges is a theme that runs through the newly commissioned fourth string quartet of Australian composer Ross Edwards. Drawing inspiration from many cultures, his new work evokes the rousing possibilities for harmony in diversity, and the role that music can play in the journey from grief to joy.

Intimate Letters, nicknamed by Janáček himself, refers to the vast collection of over 700 letters the composer wrote to his reluctant muse Kamila Stösslová. Fuelled by unrequited love, each intensely emotional movement captures some of the most expressive music of the 20th century.

ARTISTS

DALE BARLTROPVIOLIN

Dale has performed as a chamber and orchestral musician across the globe. In addition to his position with the ASQ, he serves as Concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and has been Concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Principal Second Violin of the St Paul Chamber Orchestra. He has appeared as soloist and director with all three orchestras. Hailing from Brisbane, Dale made his solo debut with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra at the age of 15 and was Concertmaster of the Queensland and Australian Youth Orchestras. He then moved to the USA to attend the University of Maryland and later the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with William Preucil, Gerald Fischbach and members of the Guarneri and Cavani Quartets.

FRANCESCA HIEWVIOLIN

A musician of diverse interests and influences, Francesca Hiew has maintained a multifaceted career. Prior to joining the Australian String Quartet, Francesca was a member of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. She enjoys teaching and coaching chamber ensembles, regularly tutoring for the Australian Youth Orchestra, Adelaide Youth Orchestra and the University of Adelaide. A former student and fellow of the Australian National Academy of Music, Francesca is passionate about fostering the future of chamber music. Growing up as the second youngest of seven children in Brisbane, Francesca began learning the violin at the age of four at the Stoliarsky School of Music. Her primary teachers were William Hennessy, Michele Walsh, Emin Tagiev and Mark Lakirovich.

STEPHEN KINGVIOLA

Violist of the ASQ since 2012, chamber music has taken Stephen to venues and festivals around Australia and the world, collaborating with a diverse array of both classical and contemporary artists. During the 1990’s he studied and worked with the Coolidge Quartet in the USA, mentored by the Guarneri and Emerson String Quartets. In 2003 he returned to Australia as a member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Stephen grew up in Canberra and almost completed an architecture degree before falling for the viola. He holds a Doctorate in Chamber Music and teaches at the University of Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium. His teachers have included Elizabeth Morgan, James Dunham, Katherine Murdock and Michael Tree.

SHARON GRIGORYANCELLO

Before joining the ASQ, Sharon held a position with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. She was also a founding member of the Hopkins String Quartet and toured regularly with the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Whilst studying in Berlin in 2011, Sharon performed with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Spira Mirabilis Chamber Orchestra. She has performed with the Australian World Orchestra, plays in a duo with guitarist Slava Grigoryan, and is the Artistic Director of the Barossa, Baroque and Beyond Festival. Sharon studied at the University of Melbourne, the Australian National Academy of Music, and in Europe with professors Valter Dešpalj, Howard Penny, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt and Nicolas Altstaedt.
