‘Christian Tetzlaff’s recital here in 2015 is still talked about by those who were there as one of the outstanding musical moments in our 10-year history. And we now have the opportunity to hear him again, alone on stage, as he plays Bach and Bartók like no-one else.’ Marshall McGuire, Director of Programming
Christian Tetzlaff is constantly reinventing himself. Whether battling an orchestra in a concerto, or standing alone on stage, he is always searching for new ways to express the essence of the music he performs. It doesn’t get much more essential than Tetzlaff performing Bach’s solos, in this case the magisterial D-minor Partita, culminating in its overpowering Chaconne, and the C-major Sonata, a study in counterpoint and dance. Bartók’s sinewy and mysterious solo violin sonata was inspired by Bach, viewed through the prism of modernism – a fitting end to a concert of the era-spanning brilliance of Christian Tetzlaff’s art.
