A deep dive into Wagner’s Tannhäuser overture
The MSO performs the overture to one of Wagner’s first operas, Tannhäuser from 1845. A musical summary of the entire work including the famous theme from the ‘Pilgrim’s Chorus’, this overture is one of orchestral vignettes – depicting the tale of seduction and sacred devotion to come. Wagner himself called this music, “sensuously exultant”.
