Event details

Melissa Aldana is something of a trail-blazer – she is both the first female musician and the first South American to win the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone competition.

With her New York-based quartet and Chilean animators, Aldana presents a stunning six-part multimedia suite which creates a musical and visual narrative about Frida Kahlo and her life. Visions for Frida Kahlo draws parallels between Aldana’s experience as a female saxophonist in a male-dominated community and Kahlo’s experience as a female artist struggling to assert herself in a landscape dominated by men.

This Australian premiere and Melbourne International Jazz Festival exclusive is an experience not to be missed.
