‘Poetry is deep play. It’s comfort. It’s challenge. Just like a friend.’ Paul Kelly
A new online series, Bookmarks is an opportunity to connect with other readers, discover new books and share reflections together in conversation.
The next book the club will read is Love is Strong as Death, a collection of favourite poems chosen by legendary singer-songwriter Paul Kelly. The poems range from Shakespearean sonnets to contemporary verse, from works by Australian poets to translated literature, and from pithy one-liners to excerpts from epic narratives. These works speak to the great themes of literature that have proven so powerful in Paul Kelly’s music: love and death – and everything in between. This wide-ranging and deeply moving anthology will challenge, uplift and encourage you to make poetry a lifetime friend.
Paul will join writer, editor and all-round book-lover Jaclyn Crupi for the conversation, making this an incredible opportunity to engage with one of Australia’s most popular singer-songwriters and explore the poetry that has brought him joy and inspiration throughout his life.
