As at Friday 13 March 2020, 5pm:
Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on Friday afternoon that the Australian Government advised that non-essential gatherings attended by more than 500 people were to no longer go ahead effective Monday 16 March. Melbourne Recital Centre acknowledges and understands the reasons for this recommendation and is currently in the process of determining what this means for the Centre’s upcoming events. We are also awaiting advice from the Victorian Government about next steps.
Events taking place at Melbourne Recital Centre on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 March will go ahead as planned at this stage. Melbourne Recital Centre will update all ticketholders with information immediately as it comes to hand. The Centre cares deeply about the health and safety of its audiences, artists and staff. Please check the Centre’s website and social media channels for the latest updates and information.
About this event
Grammy winning singer, banjo and fiddle player Rhiannon Giddens returns to Australia with Italian musical alchemist Francesco Turrisi.
Finding that her 19th-century American minstrel banjo tunes and his Sicilian tambourine rhythms fit naturally together, the artists trace the evolution of music from Africa and the Middle East, highlighting its monumental influence on Western culture through the ages.
Transformed by Rhiannon’s exquisite voice and Francesco’s metamorphic talents, their thoughtful and highly ambitious music is at once a condemnation of ‘othering’ and a celebration of shared experience.
‘Few artists are so fearless and so ravenous in their exploration.’ Pitchfork
‘Timeless and utterly of this time. Filigree and ferocious in equal measure.’ Irish Times
Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre in arrangement with Supersonic Enterprises
