Event details

Melbourne Guitar Quartet’s (MGQ’s) innovative arrangements, technical flair and superb ensemble playing add brilliance to Australia’s musical landscape.

Its unique instrumentation of classical bass, baritone, standard, treble and octave guitars opens a wealth of imaginative possibilities. Amassing diverse audience appeal since its formation in 2005, MGQ captivates avid lovers of chamber music, guitar aficionados and concert first-timers alike.

In this concert, MGQ ventures outside the guitar repertoire and interprets a collection of well-loved classics for its unique guitar family instrumentation. The dazzling virtuosity of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 is certainly not lost and neither is the delightful melodic familiarity of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite as both works find a new home on the guitar. MGQ’s unique variations on excerpts from Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No.3 make for a guitar program unlike any other.
