‘A musical journey … interweaving an outstanding live performance by a talented bunch of new and older Australians with archival recordings from Canberra’s National Library.’ Magica Fossati, SBS
Italian folk music has a rich and complex history. In the country’s south it is imbued with Greek, Arabic and African influences. The same tantalising sounds and textures can be heard in contemporary folk band Santa Taranta.
Old and new songs are played back to back in a life-affirming show that’s centred on the Italian migrant experience in Australia. You’ll likely hear a polka, pizzica or tarantella as the seven-piece band traverses a wide-ranging setlist. Delving into themes of departure and arrival, love and loss, hope and life in a new country, these beautiful songs deliver hits of pure nostalgia. Adding another dimension are field recordings from Canberra’s National Library. Composer, performer and ethnomusicologist Salvatore Rossano researched the songs and stories, weaving them into original works. The result is richly layered folk music with a bedrock of history at its heart.
