Event details

Led by internationally acclaimed musicians David Griffiths (clarinet), Svetlana Bogosavljevic (cello) and Timothy Young (piano), Ensemble Liaison is lauded for its imaginative programs and stellar collaborations with leading Australian and international performers.

Kings of Broadway and pillars of 20th-century American music and song, the genius of George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein shines through theatre classics like Porgy & Bess and West Side Story. Ensemble Liaison performs virtuosic chamber arrangements of the greatest hits from these two works. British pianist Kathryn Stott joins the Ensemble for John Musto’s brilliant two-piano suite capturing the best of Bernstein, and Earl Wild’s arrangements of Gershwin are a master class in piano transcription.

Fun at the opera continues in Lovreglia’s exquisite transcription on themes from Verdi’s La Traviata and extending the tradition of Italian bel canto is Sollima’s ‘Il Bell-Antonio’, a hauntingly beautiful song written as incidental music to an old film. To top it off is Henryson’s Off Pist, of which the composer says: ‘In music, we like to take our instruments to places they have never been, by extending range, playing techniques and even genres, involving an exhilarating degree of risk. We like to cross the black-and-yellow tape and go off-piste …’

This raison d’être describes precisely the kind of pioneering and adventurous spirit audiences find so appealing in Ensemble Liaison.
