‘Gelareh’s voice can at one moment be soothing and dreamlike and then rise to artfully crafted keens – acute intensities that retain a knife-like edge of control and abandon.’ Hear & Now

Celebrated Iranian-Australian musician Gelareh Pour and experimental drummer Brian O’Dwyer are ZÖJ. The duo are frequent collaborators, known for their intoxicating music and unexpected fusions of Persian and Western motifs.

Pour’s classical background comes through in her masterful kamancheh (Iranian spike fiddle) playing and evocative interpretations of Persian poetry sung in Farsi. Together with O’Dwyer’s experimental rhythms, the duo’s nuanced playing and synergetic connection sparkles with emotion and purpose.

ZÖJ directly translates to ‘couple’, and these two masters of improvisation, from diverse musical backgrounds, have undoubtedly found a common language.
