‘The future of chamber music.’ Classic Melbourne

About the artists

Charismatic clarinetist Lloyd Van’t Hoff joins Penny Quartet for an exquisite quintet concert. The award-winning artists’ technical brilliance, youthful energy and animating spirit bring sparkle to classical and contemporary treasures for this combination of instruments.

About the concert

Johannes Brahms transformed music for clarinet, and his influence continues to extend far beyond his lifetime. Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet is an undoubted masterpiece in the repertoire. One of his most lyrical creations, it is beloved for its nostalgic and autumnal mood, qualities which are naturally suited to the clarinet’s lucid tone. Contemporary French composer Gérard Pesson shares Brahms’s relentlessly poetic approach. His clarinet quintet, Nebenstück, is a re-arrangement of the late composer’s Ballade, Op.10 No.4. Haunting in its beauty, it reveals another side of Brahms’s magical art.
