Event details
New music duo COW strives to promote vibrant Australian works for viola and piano through collaborations with inspiring composers.
COW was formed at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) by Molly Collier O’Boyle and Liam Wooding to premiere a new work by Melbourne composer Stuart Greenbaum. The duo has since gone on to perform at the Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity in Canada where they were an Ensemble-in-Residence in 2020.
About this concert
Together with Andrew Norman’s Shakespearean Sonnets, COW presents recent collaborations with established and emerging composers — a snapshot of works created in 2020 amidst a climate of change and global uncertainty. We can experience loneliness in the midst of a crowded room, yet also a sense of dramatic connection in extremely isolated places. Stuart Greenbaum presents this idea in his work Remote Connection, conjuring both distance and closeness for the listener. Scottish harpist and composer Ailie Robertson explores scordatura (specially tuned) solo viola in her new work, Filska, meaning ‘high spirited’ in the local language of the Shetland Islands. Completing the concert is a new multi-media work, Forgetting Lessons by Connor D’Netto, which takes inspiration from young artists’ responses to isolation, change and the fragile balances on everyday life.
The Spotlight Series is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Robert Salzer Foundation.
