‘Impressive.’ Classic Melbourne

Acclaimed Melbourne string quartet Quartz unites violinists Kathryn Taylor and Philippa West, violist Merewyn Bramble and cellist Zoe Wallace in refreshing concerts of classical and contemporary repertoire. Frequently collaborating with sought-after Australian artists, Quartz’s vibrant performances are a confluence of Australian musical talent and world-class technique.

About this concert

‘Quartettsatz’, Schubert’s single movement for string quartet exists as the only completed part of his intended full work. It is often performed as a prelude to something larger but holds its own candle as a short spurt of both simmering fury and unrestrained joy. The string quartet ‘Rosamunde’ emerged three years later amid some of Schubert’s monumental compositions, during a state of physical and mental unrest. The little brother of such late greats as ‘Death & the Maiden’, this string quartet cements its feet with poignance and melancholy, undulating tension and melodies that make the heart soar.
