Gemma Turvey & The Consort of Melbourne

Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre & The Consort of Melbourne

Pianist Gemma Turvey unites with acclaimed vocal ensemble The Consort of Melbourne for an evening of ethereal vocal music threaded with the spirit of improvisation.

About Gemma Turvey & The Consort of Melbourne

The Consort of Melbourne brings together eight of the city’s finest chamber singers, under the direction of Steven Hodgson. The Consort’s versatile music-making has led to collaborations with The Rolling Stones, and the Australian Chamber and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras. This concert is an opportunity to hear the Consort’s spectacular voices paired with Gemma Turvey’s evocative pianism, which bridges musical traditions.

About this concert

Inspired by saxophonist Jan Garbarek’s famous Officium collaboration with The Hilliard Ensemble, the evening features vocal music from the 12th to the 16th centuries, interlaced with delicate piano improvisations and interludes. Musical treasures, including Perotinus’s Beata Viscera and Hildegard von Bingen’s Columba Aspexit, are brought into new light by this evocative collaboration that transcends musical boundaries.
