Consortium unites a band of Australia’s finest viol players to explore the rich repertoire for viol consort. Drawing upon a wealth of shared historical performance practice knowledge and a deep love of the consort medium, Consortium shares the beauty and crystalline purity of the traditional repertoire for viol consort alongside exciting new music by Australian composers written for this unique medium.

About the concert

Their performance in Primrose Potter Salon presents sounds of the 16th and 17th century, a time where the viol flourished in England and Europe. A tapestry of interwoven lines that produce a harmonious whole, the sound of a consort of viols is both captivating and intriguing, inspiring not only musicians from the viol’s heyday centuries ago, but contemporary composers too.

Utilising the varied and fascinating shapes and forms of the viol, through music representing the apex of Renaissance polyphony, juxtaposed by new Australian works inspired by the unique sonorities of viols in consort, Melbourne’s Consortium will showcase the sound world of an instrument rich in history.
