Three powerful and virtuosic arrangements based on La Folia.
About the artists
Gintaute Gataveckaite [Ghin-toe-té Gata-vet-skyté] is an award-winning, internationally acclaimed Lithuanian pianist living in Melbourne. As a performing artist, exploring and expanding her diverse repertoire and sharing music with an audience forms an essential part of Gintaute’s life and practice.
About the concert
Her performance in Primrose Potter Salon presents three masterpieces based on La Folia, a Portuguese dance tune originating from the 16th century. The word ‘folly’ (it. ‘madness’) refers to the frenzied way peasants twirled to the music.
The popular theme has often been referenced by composers, and Gintaute’s performance showcases three powerful and virtuosic arrangements of this theme, by three of the greatest pianist-composers of all time.
Commencing with Rachmaninoff’s strikingly modern Variations on a Theme of Corelli, followed by Busoni’s arrangement of Bach’s famous ‘Chaconne’, the recital concludes with Liszt’s spectacular Spanish Rhapsody. A powerful performance of virtuosity and precision carrying listeners back to the 16th century.
