Details
An unmatched union of vitality and refinement.
About the artists
Viola da gamba expert Laura Vaughan and early keyboard aficionado Dr. Donald Nicolson are dynamic members of the early music movement in Australia, known to charm and enchant audiences.
About the concert
Bach’s three sonatas for viola da gamba and obbligato harpsichord are fascinating works that represent one of the composer’s chief contributions to the modern idea of chamber music. Composed as trio sonatas in three parts, the harpsichord and viola da gamba are given equal importance with moments ranging from brilliant Italianate passagework and concerto-like grandeur to profoundly beautiful slow melodies.
Through the delicate tonal capacities of the viola da gamba and harpsichord, Vaughan and Nicolson give these chamber music masterpieces by one of the world’s greatest composers a perfect voice. An unmatched union of vitality and refinement.
