Nat Bartsch – Hope

Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre & Nat Bartsch

A neo-romantic meditation on the compounding impact of the Black Summer bushfires and COVID-19.

About the artists

Pianist and composer Nat Bartsch occupies the space between classical and jazz with warmth and tenderness. She has a unique approach to the piano, composing and improvising lyrical melodies, and placing them in music that blends neoclassical ostinatos with rich jazz harmony.

She has been nominated for both jazz and classical ARIAs, most recently for her ABC Classic release Hope. She was the 2021 recipient of the Merlyn Myer Commission at Melbourne Recital Centre.

About the concert

Hope is a neo-romantic meditation on the compounding impact of the Black Summer bushfires and COVID-19. Bartsch’s writing was at first an exercise in inspiring hope, however, the events of 2020 soon bought on a sense of hopelessness. The music speaks to the universal experience of living through these times, ebbing between hopefulness and hopelessness.

Her performance in Primrose Potter Salon will blend atmospheric composition, florid melodic embellishments and ambient electronics. Joined by a live string quartet for the public premiere of Just Us, a commission by Hugh Robertson for his wife Genevieve Buzo on their wedding day.

Praise for Nat Bartsch

‘Listening to Bartsch’s music is akin to feeling a reassuring hand resting on one’s shoulder. It’s music that invites contemplation, and that radiates tenderness, empathy – and yes, hope.’ The Age
