Details

Inspiring string quartets centuries apart.

Acclaimed Melbourne string quartet Quartz are a confluence of Australian musical talent and world-class technique. Their exciting yet sensitive interpretations of great masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire are a delight to hear and much loved by audiences.

About the concert

Their performance in Primrose Potter Salon presents enthralling works for the string quartet by Haydn and Ravel. Avidly regarded as the ‘Grandfather’ of the string quartet, Haydn was in his autumn years when he composed his final group of quartets. By this time, whilst drawing on his impressive catalogue of chamber works, Haydn was broadening his creative horizons.

A century on, young Ravel lived in the realm of impressionist artists and musicians. A freshly hatched composer, Ravel found inspiration in Russian music, the Spaniards and friend Claude Debussy, yet for his sole string quartet, he returned to the more refined characteristics and cohesion of motifs as in early classical works.
