Season Three: Illuminate
From July to September, Melbourne Recital Centre presents Season Three: Illuminate.
Taking inspiration from Guling (Orchid Season), Poorneet (Tadpole Season), brisk winter days shrouded in mist, high-running rivers and experiences that nurture, heal and offer space for reflection.
The program features over 50 local and international artists including Paul Kelly & Paul Grabowsky, Miriam Allan & Erin Helyard, Lady Lash, Yeol Eum Son and many more.
The design concept was created by Dixon Patten (Bitja) of Bayila Creative. Dixon is a proud Gunnai, Yorta Yorta, Gunditjmara, Dhudhuroa man whose narratives often delve deep into familial history, often in celebration and exploration of culture.
‘The artwork acknowledges the transformations that new seasons create. When there is bleak mist and the rivers run high, it initiates growth for our native flora. It is a time when the Guling’ (Orchids) bloom and the Poorneet’ (Tadpoles) spawn; marking a new cycle of regeneration.
The Birrarung (Yarra river) encourages reflection; of its nourishing and healing power and as it meanders to the bay, it sustains a whole eco-system and reminds us of the interconnectedness of land, water and sky. Just like the elemental forces cause waves in water and disrupts stagnation; the sound waves in music bless us with song, storytelling and connection.
Melbourne is a creativity haven and the community nurtures music and the arts and through this shared interaction, support and encouragement, we can learn, grow and thrive together as a society.’ Dixon Patten, Bayila Creative
