Featuring Joe Camilleri, Kate Ceberano & Paul Grabowsky
Bob Dylan’s influence on popular music is enormous. As a songwriter he pioneered different schools of pop songwriting; as a vocalist he redefined the vocalist’s role; and as an instrumentalist he sparked several genres of pop music, including electrified folk-rock and country-rock. His influence echoes across generations with many of his songs becoming popular standards and his best albums undisputed classics of the rock and roll canon.
Two of Australia’s most popular and celebrated contemporary vocalists, Kate Ceberano and Joe Camilleri, pair with Melbourne Recital Centre Artist-in-Residence, six-time ARIA award-winner Paul Grabowsky and the Paul Grabowsky Quartet, and explore a fascinating selection from Dylan’s extensive songbook. Hear music by one of the 20th century’s greatest songwriters and poets interpreted by Australia’s most talented musicians.
She’s been called Australia’s high priestess of pop, is an award winning jazz singer, artistic director and a songwriter with the talent to take a tune to the top of the charts. Kate Ceberano was the first Australian woman to be inducted into the Australian Songwriters Association (ASA) Hall of Fame, and her soulful voice, charismatic nature and exotic looks have earned her ‘Australian icon’ status.
Joe Camilleri, writer of milestone Australian songs such as ‘So Young’, ‘Hit and Run’ and ‘Shape I’m In’, has given his life to making music in this country. Leader of two of Australia’s most successful bands, Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons and The Black Sorrows, Joe’s music has become part of Australian music culture.
Pianist, composer, arranger and conductor Paul Grabowsky is one of Australia’s most distinguished artists. Having performed with many jazz luminaries including Chet Baker, Art Farmer and Johnny Griffin, Paul has established a reputation as one of Australia’s leading jazz musicians with such bands as his own trio and sextet, the Wizards of Oz and as musical director for singer Vince Jones. Together all three bring their talents together for a musical journey that celebrates the talents of Bob Dylan.
‘The songs of Bob Dylan have become part of the inner fabric of our lives, and his creative journey has recently brought him around to the Great American Songbook, which has traditionally formed the basis for many extraordinary jazz performances. Now we return the favour, with an investigation from a jazz perspective of his masterpieces, interpreted by two of our greatest vocalists, Joe Camilleri, himself a deep Dylan devotee, and Kate Ceberano, whose song choices will surprise and delight,’ says Grabowsky.
